About Us

At The Indus Academy we are committed to providing a broad and balanced curriculum for Year 3 to Year 6 that equips children to be positive, productive and effective contributors to society. Class teachers and subject teachers provide the children with a range of experiences covering varied subjects thereby ensuring that they have the opportunity to collaborate, develop individual skills and be challenged. The programme focusses on the development of the whole child building confidence to inquire about their world, both within the classroom and beyond.

Employing an inquiry based approach to teaching and learning, we believe students will be empowered and enabled to develop their own thinking skills and problem solving strategies. Creativity and critical thinking are the primary thrust of our rich and varied curriculum. It is aimed at making our students become increasingly independent learners as they move through Years 3 to 6.

We encourage the risks students take in their learning as we believe it is through ‘giving it a try’ and not being afraid to make mistakes, that students become engaged and reflective learners - able to effectively apply their skills and knowledge to real life problems.

OUR CURRICULUM

The study of Language, Literacy and Literature at The Indus Academy focuses on reading a range of text types for both information and enjoyment, including author and novel studies. Students produce a range of imaginative and informative texts (including narratives, persuasive writing, reports, poems, play scripts), experimenting with text structures and language features. They learn how to edit their own and others’ work using appropriate criteria. Students are able to discuss their ideas and explore role plays in dramatic texts.

In Mathematics, we focus on our students having sound ‘number sense’ including proficiency and understanding of place value, times tables, the four operations and fractions. We emphasise the correct use of mathematical language and problem solving.

Urdu

Like in English, the focus of our teaching in this subject is to enhance skills in reading, spelling, grammar, writing, and comprehension and lays the ground for our students to be proficient in our national language.

Science allows students to develop greater understanding about the world, explore it with interest and develop their skills in the use of scientific investigative approach.

History & Geography opens the children’s mind to the learning of past times and different peoples and cultures. It gives them a broad world view.

Additionally we offer Music, Pottery and Tae Kwon Do as co-curricular activities.

Students are encouraged to express themselves with confidence and courteously share their ideas and opinions with others. We aim to make the most of each student’s strengths and encourage them to set goals and reflect on their learning.

From Year 3 to Year 6, there is a continuity and progression of skills and concepts with clear lines of development. The overriding emphasis is on making learning enjoyable so as to engage our students and produce an unending love of learning.
